I wish I could find a way to squeeze a Chaplin film into one of the classes I teach. To give a new audience the experience of Chaplin – wow. Considering all of Chaplin's films in the last few months, I found City Lights to be the most difficult to write cogently (thus the delay). There is a great deal of weight on the film, particularly in circles where it's considered one of the (or the) greatest films, but I'm glad it worked.

Indeed, another great essay on the man I regard as...

Indeed, another great essay on the man I regard as the greatest genius in the entire history of the cinema. And CITY LIGHTS is probably my favorite film of all time, edging out Bresson's BALTHEZAR, Ozu's TOKYO STORY and Mizoguchi's SANSHO THE BAILIFF.

T.S., you have really outdone yourself with this particular review, but the entire series has been superb. Indeed, Chaplin was a painstaking perfectionist who shot and reshot over and over as you relate, and that ending was left (by you) unexamined so that the 'beauty in the eye of the beholder' can play itself out. Yes it is one of the most imitated and powerful conclusions to any film.

Your infectious passion has again shone through with this marvelous writing.

Another great Chaplin review

Another great Chaplin review

T.S.
